This fall, Thompson Hotels will open its second property in Mexico, Thompson Playa del Carmen, which is owned by Thor Urbana Capital and managed by Commune Hotels + Resorts.
“Thompson Playa del Carmen marks the much-anticipated expansion of Thompson Hotels in Mexico, after the recent unveiling of our first property in the country, the Cape in Cabo San Lucas,” says Niki Leondakis, CEO of Commune Hotels + Resorts.
Two buildings will comprise the oceanfront property—the 92-room primary hotel structure and an adjacent 27-room Beach House—which will be situated on La Quinta Avenida, a two-mile, pedestrian-only thoroughfare in Riviera Maya that is lined with retail and F&B outlets.
Mexico City-based architecture firm GFA has been charged with designing the property in collaboration with interior designers Niz+Chauvet , also based in Mexico City. The 1950s-inspired property features hand-pressed tiles, light-washed concrete, Mexican marble, oxidized metal shelving, locally made furnishings, a carved lava rock lobby desk, and an array of textural, midcentury Mexican accents clad in colorful geometric patterns. Guestrooms will display original art, while the Thompson suites will come equipped with outdoor firepits and hot tubs.
The Beach House will be a more intimate, bohemian-inspired experience when it debuts early next year. Each accommodation will offer a private terrace, and guests will have access to a beachfront pool, cabanas, and a casual restaurant and bar.
A 30,000-square-foot rooftop will house an infinity pool and a seafood restaurant. Dubbed CATCH, the eatery will be New York-based EMM Group’s first dining concept in Mexico and feature a beachy aesthetic highlighted in turquoise and living green accents, such as a chef’s garden and living wall.
