Located in the historic downtown of Salem, Massachusetts, Lark Hotels’ boutique Hotel Salem has arrived as the brand’s 17th property. Lark’s director of design Rachel Reider oversaw design efforts in both guestrooms and communal spaces, all of which are appointed with a combination of sleek furnishings and touches from the 1950s and ’60s.
The design pays homage to the property’s history as an upscale clothing store with a mixture of midcentury décor and vintage, retail-inspired elements. White walls and warm, neutral wood furnishings span the interior, which is accented with jewel tones and rich gold detailing. The building’s roots are further referenced in artistic details like antique cameras and abstracted photos of department store interiors. The hotel also welcomes visitors with a handpainted ghost sign on its brick façade.
Most of the 44 rooms are outfitted with 16-foot-tall ceilings and original windows. A variety of configurations span the hotel’s first through third floors, from compact king deluxe rooms with trundle beds to the 500-square-foot Lark suite that sleeps four guests.
The modern American dining concept Counter is slated to arrive onsite in the coming months. The hotel will be crowned with a rooftop bar and restaurant, aptly named the Roof, beginning in 2018.
