Hamburg-based JOI-Design has unveiled its designs for the Hotel Am Fischmarkt in Rheinberg, a town in Germany’s Niederrhein region. Set on a corner of the town’s market square, the 37-room boutique hotel comprises a row of former 15th to 20th-century houses. The hotel’s design pays tribute to the plaza’s heritage as a fish market.
The existing façades have been updated with contemporary details to connect old and new. Steel, wood, and glass have been incorporated to translate the traditional architectural aspects of 19th-century market halls into the modern space. Reception desks in the lobby are clad in herringbone-patterned timber with an industrial-style clock hanging on a brick wall. Calming neutral tones are brought to live with shades of crimson and coral. Natural tones and textures are featured in guestrooms alongside complementary dark wood flooring and sisal carpeting.
The hotel’s main restaurant and bar Ratskeller is dressed in a rustic muted palette that includes dark wood and brick to create a relaxed, convivial atmosphere. A partition made from wine bottles and timber frames divides the dining room and bar area while industrial-sized glass globes hang from blackened steel frames to illuminate the bar counter.
The contemporary Bistro Berka is flooded with daylight and features nautical-themed artwork. Modern, urban details include a diamond-patterned timber wall veneer, eclectic floor tiles, modern furniture, and clean-lined lamps in copper and brass. Both eateries can be merged as one space for large gatherings while the subterranean vault Vinothek serves as a host for private events and tastings.
Meeting and event spaces are adorned with gilt-framed glass chandeliers, soft-toned carpets, and elegant drapes that frame windows overlooking the Underberg Palace in Rheinberg’s town center.
