Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, part of the IHG Hotels & Resorts portfolio, is gearing up to open a boutique hotel in Santo Domingo.
Marking the brand’s first property in the Dominican Republic, Kimpton Las Mercedes will be an extension of its natural and historic surroundings when it launches this summer.
The hotel is set within a 16th-century structure, revitalized by Spanish architect Rafael Moneo, that reflects the transformation of its historic neighborhood into a bustling cultural hub. Original materials were preserved and repurposed where possible, while a modern addition was constructed behind the original building.
The hotel will feature 130 guestrooms, including eight expansive rooftop suites. Each accommodation will boast a private balcony, and local artists and craftsmen were tapped to infuse each room with colorful design elements that represent the city’s vibrant spirit.
The hotel’s dining options include Zola, its signature restaurant with a retractable roof for al fresco dining; El Patio, a secluded courtyard garden bar and lounge; and lounge, offering locally sourced cigar and rums, that showcases a 500-year-old well that was uncovered and restored during the building’s renovation.
Additionally, the hotel will house several multi-use spaces, a ballroom, and a rooftop pool and fitness center.
Kimpton Las Mercedes will be the fifth Kimpton hotel in the Caribbean and Latin America.
