San Francisco-based Paletteur is leading the complete renovation of Kimpton’s Hotel Solamar in San Diego. Halfway finished, the 235-room hotel will be fully redesigned by March.
The firm took inspiration from San Diego’s Balboa Park and Southern California’s historic missions. Designers Gino Castaño and David Lasker conceptualized a contemporary Spanish style, blending Spanish-influenced architecture with eclectic modern fixtures and touches.
Each guestroom has been updated to create a modern mini suite. Curved sofas provide extra seating, while glass and mirrors distribute light to create an open and airy feel. Details include woven vinyl headboards, modern nightstands and light fixtures, suspended TV credenzas, and surfboard-inspired bathroom mirrors and tiles. The color palette is inspired by the location, and includes fuchsia, and a range of purple, gold, and orange hues.
“We knew the hotel wanted to create a sense of discovery and offer an authentic San Diego experience,” says Castaño, a Paletteur co-founder. “With this project, we chose textures and colors that visually stimulate visitors and help form an emotional connection.”
