New York-based Champalimaud Design has completed its upscale overhaul of the boutique Aspen, Colorado property the Little Nell. Inspired by the textures, tones, and spirit of the city, the redesign boasts 78 upgraded guestrooms, eight refreshed junior suites, and updated corridors.
“The Little Nell’s new design recalls in texture, tone, and attitude Aspen’s soul and its distinctiveness as a silver mining town. The particular realness of the place was a grounding quality that we respected and integrated into our work,” says firm founder and president Alexandra Champalimaud.
Natural light accents the palette of blue, tan, and gray, which reflect the relaxed nature of the city. Rooms are punctuated with blue ottomans, decorative pillows, and custom throws, while new wallcoverings complement the headboard wall and recall a wintry snowstorm alongside subtle elements like gilded wallpaper. Plush carpeting spans the corridors.
“One of our design goals was to lighten and brighten the guest rooms which we accomplished through reflective shades of creams, grays and pale blue accents that enliven the spaces,” adds Champalimaud partner Jon Kastl. “We took a dressmaker approach with the details of the furniture adding subtle trims, refined stitching and bespoke features that give the room an added layer and greater depth. One element of surprise we executed was lining the interiors of the closets with a beautiful paper that is reminiscent of the metal shingles that once graced the roofs of the historic mining shacks.”
The sustainable overhaul reimagined 90 percent of existing pieces, including headboards, seating with new upholstery, palettes, and finishes. Wooden furniture was also refurbished.
