The Los Angeles Athletic Club (LAAC) has announced the completion of the second phase of its $10 million renovation, to be unveiled later this month. Led by locally based firm SRK Architects, the latest upgrade of the 138-year-old private club focused on the refresh of the 12-story building’s fourth, fifth, and sixth floors.
One of the new updates is the refresh of the women’s locker rooms, which is outfitted with a lounge along with numerous wet facilities including showers and a sauna. The fifth-floor locker room is also appointed with a 17-foot-tall sculpture of the god Mercury, which us flanked by an expansive grand staircase that will connect the fifth floor reception to the sixth floor upon completion later this year. LAAC has also welcomed the arrival of Wave, which is created to serve female or gender-nonconforming professionals with a designated and communal workspace. Local designer Tracy Beckmann has also spearheaded five reimagined meeting rooms on the fourth floor, blending period furnishings with rich colors and other artful touches.
Crafted in homage to surfing titan and former club patron Duke Kahanamoku, the tropical Kahuna Room is drenched in sunlight and populated with French-style banquettes, copper accents, and palm frond wallpaper. Spelled out in pink neon on the wall is Kahanamoku quote “I have never seen snow and do not know what winter means.”
LAAC will introduce a final round of renovations on the sixth floor by the end of the year in addition to an unisex spa, barbershop, nail salon, poolside lounge, and reimagined dining space.
