Located between Mexico’s Riviera Maya jungle and Playa del Carmen, Mahekal Beach Resort will reveal the final phase of its $16 million renovation this month.
The project included the complete overhaul of the resort’s adjacent sister property, Las Palapas, which will be rebranded under the Mahekal name. Stone pathways will lead to new 74 palapa-style bungalows—increasing the property’s total room count to 196 guestrooms, suites, and penthouses.
Featuring convenient beach access, the new accommodations are designed with high-end finishes; Mayan-inspired details; palapa-style roofs; artisan stenciled floors; new furnishings, such as hammocks; and private open-air terraces, with some offering personal plunge pools.
The resort’s public spaces—including the lobby, restrooms, and reception area—are also upgraded, with new furnishings, flooring, and accessories added to the main lobby bar.
Amenities will include four pools; a seaside hot tub; the refurbished Las Olas, Cocina, and Fuego restaurants, the latter of which will feature a Tulum-style woodburning oven; the Boli’s, Itzi, Las Olas, and Fuego bars; newly created function space to span 4,500 square feet; a revamped gift shop; and the new Revive Spa and fitness center, which will boast a locally inspired aesthetic throughout and outdoor relaxation lounges, as well as treatment rooms.
