Moxy Banff has made its debut in the heart of the Canadian Rockies.
Part of the Marriott International portfolio, Moxy Banff, developed in partnership with Canalta Hotels, occupies a building constructed in 1964 as Banff’s first commercial motor hotel.
Designed by New York-based Workshop/APD, the property pays homage to its historical architecture and local roots with a bold midcentury design that features expansive rundle stone walls and distinct precast guest wings that flank the lobby lounge and Bar Moxy.
Maintaining the bones of the structure ensured the Banff staple remained part of the town’s landscape, and also resulted in a more sustainable renovation.
Moxy Banff’s retro design
Moxy Banff boasts 109 guestrooms wrapped in a frill-free retro ski aesthetic. Rooms range from those set up with toe-to-toe beds and double bunks, to those with kitchenettes and combinable lock-off suites.
Local art is featured throughout the interior with a circular midcentury mountain landscape by Calgary artist Kirsten Bollen installed in the lobby, along with large-scale abstract murals by Edmonton artist Tanya Klimp showcased on both of the hotel’s grand staircases.
Social spaces at the Moxy Banff
Moxy Banff offers several social spaces, including a year-round heated courtyard with two hot tubs, as well as a lobby and lounge with a selection of dining options.
Vinyl enthusiasts, karaoke lovers, and movie buffs will be right at home in the Voyager Room, which offers a multimedia experience complete with a collection of more than 200 records, a vintage Klipsch Heritage sound system, hi-fidelity equipment from the 1970s, and a big screen.
“Redeveloping this property has allowed us to invest in Alberta and specifically into the Town of Banff,” says Brooke Christianson, vice president of Canalta Hotels. “Our team is proud to have worked with talented Albertans, creating new economic opportunities for our province and groovy experiences for guests.”
