Marriott International has launched the Mulu Marriott Resort & Spa, its first rainforest resort in the Asia-Pacific region.
Located in Borneo, the 101-room property is Marriott’s second on the island and the eighth in Malaysia. As one of Malaysia’s four UNESCO World Heritage sites, the site was chosen for its rainforests and natural cave formations, which are international eco-tourism attractions.
“Mulu is such a unique destination and has a great potential for hospitality growth, making it a second-to-none choice for the Marriott Hotels brand,” says Robert Stark, market vice president Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore for Marriott International.
The resort was constructed from the former 20-year-old Royal Mulu Resort. The property was inspired by the alignment of ethnic long houses, which incorporate groups of rooms connected by wooden walkways.
The resort’s River Bar was designed as an open space including sofa chairs and differently sized tables arranged by height. All of its rooms and suites include a private balcony with views of the adjacent Melinau River and rainforest.
Guests may choose from F&B outlets including the River Bar, Melinau River Lounge, and the M-Café, which features an alfresco terrace by the swimming pool.
Amenities include approximately 10,000 square feet of event and meeting space including a ballroom to accommodate up to 200 guests, a business center boardroom, a riverfront garden, an outdoor 49-foot swimming pool, a gym, Mandara spa, and an activities center.
