Led by New York-based design firm Nemaworkshop in partnership with Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide’s design team, the renovation of the 237-room W Mexico City included refurbished guestrooms and meeting spaces, and the addition of a new restaurant, J by José Andrés, the global debut from ThinkFoodGroup.
Aspects of masquerade, role-playing, and performance unique to Mexico City inspire the new design. Large-scale wall art by Mexican artist Ivan Aguirre hang in each guestroom, depicting modern interpretations of the Azteca (Aztec), luchador (wrestler), conquistador (conqueror), diva of the Mexican cinema, and Adelita (women of the Mexican Revolution). Small design touches are found throughout the hotel including lucha libre bottle openers, two-tiered coffee tables, and throw pillows that complement the wall art. Each guestroom also features an infinity mirror installation over the bed filled with traditional Mexican crafts known as alebrijes and toys.Â
The brightly colored Living Room bar reflects Mexico City’s colorful fiestas and festivals, and features a hidden tequila bar. Still to come this year are a new luxury spa concept and an updated Extreme Wow suite.
There are currently 46 W Hotels worldwide, with plans to open new ones in Shanghai, Tel Aviv, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Amman, Jakarta, Panama, Muscat, Suzhou, Changsha, Chengdu, New Delhi, Kuala Lumpur, Shenyang, Marrakech, and Brisbane by 2018.
