The Berkeley Hotel, London has unveiled its newest F&B concept, the Berkeley Bar & Terrace, crafted by Irish designer Bryan O’Sullivan with a rich royal narrative echoing Old World glamour.
Brutalist-inspired arch forms span the space in reference to the Grenadiers, an infantry regiment of the British Army whose stables were originally housed across the Wilton Place grounds upon which the hotel stands. Walnut wood timber serves as a key aspect of the material palette, sourced from a 300-year-old tree naturally felled.
Designer O’Sullivan also drew influence from the snug spaces at public houses, historically conceived to host women when men and women were not socially integrated. The mural by New York-based artist TM Davy depicting abstractions of female faces adorning the backdrop of the intimate nine-seat bar is a great example to that. The tiny bar area also opens out to a terrace hosting only four tables.
“I am honored to have been asked to create this space for The Berkeley, famous for its iconic bars,” O’Sullivan says. “The history of the building provided a springboard of inspiration for what we hope is a timeless yet contemporary new edition to this London landmark.”
