Just in time for its 45th birthday, the Pulitzer Amsterdam has reopened following a three-year overhaul. Comprising 25 400-year-old canal houses, the hotel completed its first phase of renovation in February, launching new onsite restaurant Jansz and Pulitzer’s Bar.
Now debuting is the transformed lobby, a garden café, and 145 new guestrooms spread across an array of connected passages. Nearly all guestrooms feature distinct designs, with a splash of whimsy infused throughout. The Pulitzer’s accommodations include four guestroom categories, three suite categories, and the Pulitzer’s suite. Four Collector’s suites are also available, complete with private street entrances and canal views.
Jacu Strauss, a former senior designer with Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio, is creative director of the redesign, drawing inspiration from the houses’ many inhabitants—from merchants to Dutch aristocrats.
“We have woven the multiple Pulitzer stories into the fabric of the new design to celebrate and evoke the grandeur and the heritage of these Golden Age canal houses,” says Strauss. “Our future lies in our past and we want to stay true to our roots and celebrate the history and heritage of the canal houses while being both luxurious and glamorous.”
