The Ritz-Carlton has unveiled its newest property in Japan’s Northern Kanto region at the threshold of a UNESCO World Heritage Site that establishes a majestic natural backdrop for visitors. The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko draws upon the tranquility of the setting and its ornate shrines and temples and reinterprets the vernacular through a modern lens. Nikken Sekki led architecture for the project, while public spaces and guestrooms were crafted by Melbourne-based Layan Architects + Designers.
At the property, an earthen palette of wood and stones is complemented by an abundance of natural light. Each of the 94 spacious guestrooms and suites are equipped with private balconies and engawa lounge areas to bask in the serene backdrop. Designed by Tokyo-based studio Strickland Inc., onsite dining options include the vibrant Japanese Restaurant, the Western-inspired Lakehouse, the sophisticated Bar, and a convivial lobby lounge, which overlooks a picturesque garden. Custom décor from Mashiko pottery artists populate public spaces to instill a sense of place and an appreciation for regional craftsmanship. The Spa at Ritz-Carlton, Nikko will comprise four treatment rooms, as well Ritz-Carlton’s first authentic hot-springs experience in the Japanese Onsen tradition.
