The Ritz-Carlton, Los Angeles has kicked off its most extensive renovations since its opening a decade ago. Led by Houston-based design practice Rottet Studio, the update will pay homage to the city’s Golden Agen. The hotel will remain open through the upgrades, which are slated to wrap by early fall 2019.
Classic Art Deco references will be paired with modern touches to accentuate the polished aesthetic of the space. The lobby will be thoroughly reimagined, with a front desk anchoring the open space. Handpainted gilded wallpaper crafted by artist Armand-Albert Rateau will depict the whimsical woodland scenery beneath the glossy ceiling panels. Striking custom chandeliers composed of woven rods of warm metal will recall angular and ornate bird nests, while black and white photography of feminine silhouettes serve as the backdrop for the concierge desk.
Guestroom corridors will further perpetuate the Art Deco aesthetic with minaret-patterned carpeting and shimmery wallpaper, while custom grillage pieces inspired by metalwork of the artist Edgar Bradt will accent the hallways with cast bronze patterns of leaping gazelles. A muted palette of champagne, bronze, and gray will define each accommodation, which will be lined with new wallcoverings, lattice-print carpeting, and sleek furnishings. The etched mirror headboard, which references the artwork of French glassmaker Lalique, will serve as the focal point of the rooms.
