London-based RPW Design has completed a redesign of Hotel Continental in Oslo, Norway.
Hotel Continental Oslo is more than 100 years old, first opening in 1900, and has been in the same family for more than four generations. The refurbishment of the interiors comprises a redesign of the hotel’s public areas and 155 guestrooms, bringing the interiors into the 21st century while respecting the style of the historic property.
“Our design bridges the gap between the much-valued historic, traditional architecture and the client aspiration for a clean, contemporary, and very Scandinavian concept,” says Jan Wilson, managing director of RPW. “The light palette of colors, textures, and fabrics were all carefully selected to reflect this aspiration. The use of metallic, silver, and pearl tones gives the interiors the lightness so necessary in dark northern latitudes whilst also creating a sense of tranquility and warmth.”
This concept continues in the public areas with the addition of yellow and gold feature fabrics and wall finishes on a light pearl palette whose elements complement the grandeur of the building. The design reuses the Continental’s existing collection of antique furniture and art, acquired through the generations of owners.
