Perched atop Mount Vico on the Italian island of Ischia, San Montano Resort & Spa is a 65-room retreat with sweeping views of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius.
Originally opened in 2008 by the De Siano family (third-generation hoteliers on the island), the resort recently underwent a comprehensive renovation that enhances its authentic charm with a refined Neapolitan aesthetic.
Updates include newly designed suites, refreshed public spaces and pool decks, a new signature Lighthouse Suite, and expanded wellness and guest experiences.
Anchored by 11 thermal pools fed by the island’s famed springs, the property spans seven acres of parkland and features four F&B venues, a spa rooted in volcanic mud and healing waters, beach club, and two private speedboats.
Rooted in Italian heritage
Designers Rino Gambardella and Claudio Pulicati drew inspiration from Italy’s postwar masters, including Gio Ponti and Ico Parisi, while embracing local craft and the Mediterranean landscape.
Updated guest suites embrace a deep blue Mediterranean color palette paired with modern, clean finishings crafted from marble and terracotta. Throughout the property, custom furnishings employ natural fabrics and fibers. All suites, meanwhile, feature private pools or jacuzzis, offering secluded retreats with striking sea or garden views.
Maximal views at the Lighthouse Suite
The property’s crown jewel is the new Lighthouse Suite, a two-bedroom villa housed in a former military lighthouse at the resort’s highest point. Accommodating up to six guests, the suite features a striking 968-square-foot, glass-enclosed living space (dubbed the Winter Garden) complete with a retractable roof and 360-degree views of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The villa’s interiors blend traditional Neapolitan elements with modern elegance through bespoke furniture, artisan-crafted ceramics, and a rich palette of natural materials. A 1940s military warehouse guest room has been repurposed as the suite’s circular bathroom with original portholes framing sea views.
Outside, a private garden includes a plunge pool surrounded by olive and lemon trees.
Wellness at San Montano Resort & Spa
San Montano’s wellness program draws directly from Ischia’s mineral-rich waters, with thermal circuits across five healing pools, six additional outdoor pools including a seawater option, and a natural grotto sauna carved into the rock.
