The Scandic Haymarket hotel has opened in the heart of Stockholm, housed within the former PUB department store.
Locally based architecture and interior design firm Koncept has provided upgrades as well as restoration of the iconic interiors nodding to the building’s original 1920s design, including Art Deco-style detailing on the building’s floors, staircase, and gallery-like entrance and modern, bespoke furnishings.
“There is something joyful and playful in the 1920s style that is clearly intriguing, yet today. At that time the style was a contrast to the Great Depression, communicating optimism and joy of life,” says Koncept creative director Marie Ekroth.
The hotel’s extended café Greta’s is named for film star Greta Garbo, who was once a PUB employee. Also located onsite are Paul’s restaurant and the Americain bar.
The 405-room hotel features 16 suites, a private cinema, and events space accommodating up to 800 guests. Each guestroom showcases an ambiance reminiscent of the Roaring Twenties with marble countertops, velvet couches, rose gold faucets, and custom patterned wallpaper and textiles, while one exclusive suite boasts a rooftop terrace that doubles as an outdoor events space.
