SIXTY SoHo has undergone a multimillion-dollar renovation to its guestrooms and public spaces as well as a rebranding from 60 Thompson to SIXTY SoHo.
The hotel’s redesign was conceived in a collaborative effort under the creative direction of the Pomeranc brothers and Tara Bernerd of London-based interior architecture and design practice of Tara Bernerd & Partners. The vision behind SIXTY SoHo combines bohemian chic and modern sophistication while bridging the juxtaposition of contemporary and vintage styles.
The SIXTY SoHo journey begins at the hotel’s discreet entrance with the look of a typical downtown New York pied-à-terre. Custom iron fencing frames the landscaped entryway with café-style seating, creating a hidden oasis in the heart of SoHo. In the lobby areas, Bernerd’s signature use of handsome color palettes, layered textures, warm lighting, and contrasting materials achieves a relaxed members’ club feel. Rich velvets and gray wood paneling act as a backdrop to art pieces created and curated by popular British artist Harland Miller. The space is punctuated by a thoughtful selection of midcentury and contemporary furniture.
“The transformation of SIXTY SoHo will create a stylish, residential environment for our guests seeking an exclusive urban retreat,” says owner Jason Pomeranc. “People have forgotten there is a narrative to be told in the hotel sector; we strive to be cultural storytellers through art, design, experiences, and service that will welcome, excite, and inspire our guests long after they have checked out.”
All 97 newly designed guestrooms are now appointed with planked timber floors combined with caramel leather furnishings and blue mohair accents. Dark timber slatted blinds, a bespoke bar cabinet, and a desk in petrol blue lacquer with tan leather inserts contribute to the chic bedroom interiors. The new-look hotel also now features The Gordon Bar. John McDonald, Jason Pomeranc, and Steven Eckler have partnered to open a convivial, new destination for sophisticated cocktails downtown. Bernerd took inspiration from classic uptown New York cocktail bars, reimagined with a modern aesthetic and the coziness of a private home befitting the ever-evolving SoHo neighborhood.
SIXTY SoHo will also debut a new restaurant outlet as part of a collaboration with New York City restaurateur John McDonald. McDonald and team will open Sessanta, a casual restaurant serving coastal Italian fare, in the spring of 2015. McDonald is working with Martin Brudnizki Design Studio on the restaurant’s design.
