In partnership with hotel Asset Value Enhancement (hotelAVE), and Meadow Partners, Interstate Hotels & Resorts has opened the Renwick in New York.
Located near Grand Central Station and Midtown Manhattan, the 173-room hotel features 33 custom suites in an intimate brick building. Built in 1928, the location served as a residence for creatives that include F. Scott Fitzgerald, Thomas Mann, and John Steinbeck.
Heading the redesign was New York-based Stonehill & Taylor, who paid homage to the hotel’s 1920s past with references to these iconic individuals and the hotel’s namesake, architect James Renwick, Jr. The loft-style guestrooms and suites include art studio-inspired furnishings and décor, such as easel-like television stands, desks that resemble an artist’s work bench, and carpeting designed to mimic paint-splattered concrete. All suites feature a collection of curated literary works, quotes, and other items reminiscent of the former residents.
Guests in search of an interactive experience may stay at the Artist’s Suite, which offers a blank canvas and artist’s easel with paintbrushes. Also available, the Writer’s Suite features a functioning typewriter along with an inkwell and pen. The James Renwick suite is a residential-style accommodation with living space, a bedroom, dining area, wet bar, powder room, and an outdoor terrace.
More than 19 local artists have provided the Renwick with an array of unframed, functional art. Brooklyn-born artist Gregory Siff, for example, created a multi-wall mural in the hotel’s lobby that nods to the New York skyline.
Next month, the hotel’s signature F&B offering, Bedford & Co., will open as restaurateur John DeLucie’s first solo venue.
