Owned by Host Hotels & Resorts, the Axiom Hotel is set to open this winter on San Francisco’s Union Square under the management of Kokua Hospitality.
New York-based Stonehill & Taylor is designing the 152-key property, formerly the Powell Hotel. Upon completion, it will feature custom murals by locally based street artists 1AM (short for First Amendment).
In contrast to the building’s gray walls, the murals along the property’s light wells are inspired by a visual representation of the hotel’s name and nod to its bold interiors with a grid of triangles that forms a colorful composition.
Dubbed the Cloud, a mezzanine level will boast a selection of art, such as vibrant aerial photography, that juxtaposes the city’s historic past with its hi-tech present. The Library, located near the lobby, will showcase a Stonehill & Taylor-curated collection of vintage photos and modern art, such as an abstract representation of the Golden Gate Bridge.
