Taj Connemara, South India’s oldest hotel, has returned following a comprehensive, yearlong renovation and redesign from Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. The Chennai region property dates back to 1854, and has been restored with a fresh and modern sensibility while also accentuating its classic colonial architecture.
Beyond the preserved Art Deco-style façade, Bawa injected his tropical modernism into the setting. All 147 guestrooms and suites are spread across the Tower and Heritage wings, endowed with opulent four poster beds, vintage prints, and artful furnishings. Home to the city’s first licensed bar, the updated Lady Connemara Bar & Lounge, the hotel welcomes new eateries including the all-day diner Verandah as well as the traditional Chennai eatery Raintree.
