Oxford Hotels & Resorts and Quadrum Global have announced plans to redevelop and rebrand the iconic Essex Inn on Michigan Avenue in Chicago. The hotel is undergoing a comprehensive $75 million renovation by local firm the Gettys Group to reintroduce the landmark as the Hotel Essex. The property is slated to return this April.
Originally designed by A. Epstein and Sons, the 14-story hotel will show off a restored façade of glass and steel. Its iconic Essex Inn signage will remain intact. The Gettys Group will infuse the property with a midcentury-inspired style. “With Hotel Essex’s transformation, we wanted to convey the timelessness of the era in [when] the hotel was constructed, while bringing that vibe to the 21st century,” says the Gettys Group principal Chris McDonough.
The open lobby will greet visitors with a rich and bookmatched marble wall that will serve as the backdrop to the front desk and lounge—all of which will be framed by a geometric wood screen wall. A bold new color palette will be expressed through fashion-inspired carpeting and fabric patterns. The transformed lobby will be home to the bar and restaurant concept Grant Park Bistro. An open kitchen will anchor the 40-seat French eatery, while an outdoor patio will expand seating during warmer months.
Spread across the fifth and sixth floors, the bilevel SX Sky Bar lounge will provide an upscale spot for entertainment with a backdrop of vibrant colors, metallic detailing, and whimsical décor. Black and white geometric designs will complement feminine shapes and tones, including large-scale floral patterns and ambient lighting.
The revamp of the property will add 20 guestrooms, bringing Hotel Essex’s roomcount to 274. Geometric headboards, classic lounge seating, warm colors, and soft wood textures will contrast details like blue shower tiles in each bathroom.
