The Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club has opened in Waikiki, celebrating an idyllic and laidback Hawaiian lifestyle.
Housed in a 1960s-era building, the hotel’s design embraces a relaxed décor and whimsical artwork with the help of local artists and design teams. Honolulu-based studio Retrospect Designs contributed more than 60 different fixtures, while Hawaiian fashion company Tori Richard provided the hotel with restored aloha fabrics. Midcentury-inspired photography by locally based Mark Kushimi graces the walls, showcasing the beauty of the Hawaiian landscapes. Local artwork, such as indigenous Koa carvings, dreamcatchers, vintage postcards, and playful surf-inspired illustrations also add charm.
Public spaces, including onsite restaurant Mahina & Sun’s, were designed by the Vanguard Theory. The local firm’s spaces are boosted with custom wallpaper from Andrew Mau and Nico Made, handpainted typography by Matt Tapia and Jeff Gress, a signature mural by Wooden Wave, and a staghorn fern installation from botanical boutique Paiko.
112 one-bedroom bungalows and one- and two-bedroom suites were crafted by Santa Monica, California-based Studio Collective. Inspired by the surf bungalows on Oahu’s North Shore, the rooms feature local artworks, handmade bespoke coffee tables, and decorative ceramic tiles.
