The Vanderbilt, Auberge Resorts Collection in downtown Newport, Rhode Island has revealed its comprehensive renovation. The final stage of the iconic mansion’s overhaul—led by Dallas-based firm SWOON, the Studio—introduces 21 updated guestrooms and suites defined by both modern and historic aesthetics.
“The overall design aesthetic conveys a cinematic feel, with walls saturated in a lavish palette of muted greens, blues, and ochre, and guestrooms filled with an artful mix of found objects, inspired vintage pieces, sculptural custom furnishings, hand-drawn wallcoverings, and classic patterns rendered in unexpected ways,” says SWOON founder Samantha Sano. “The resulting sentiment is one of warmth, cleverness, and approachable elegance, with the Vanderbilt, Auberge Resorts Collection staking its claim as Newport’s buzzing property—convivial and full of life.”
The refreshed hotel welcomes guests with an expansive living room on its ground floor, which comprises a restaurant, library lounge, bar, and a verdant conservatory. Accommodations were designed as a natural extension of the reimagined public spaces with an organic palette and textural elements.
Accentuating the mansion’s Georgian architecture as well as the simplicity and honesty of American colonial design, the guestrooms are layered with inspiration from the mansion’s namesake owner, Alfred Vanderbilt, and American socialite Doris Duke. Further, the spaces were crafted to convey drama through color, pattern, and texture evocative of these muses. Warmth is infused through the palette and unique focal points, including custom armoires and vintage area rugs and artwork.
