The Skye Niseko ski resort and condominium-hotel has debuted within the Hokkaido National Park. Wilson Associates crafted the luxury retreat in Hirafu, Japan with a discreet charm that radiates Japanese cultural influences as well as alpine opulence.
“In true Japanese tradition, the property exudes sophistication and understated elegance,” says Wilson Associates designer Kendall Thompson. “The unique location, situated above the village of Hirafu, combined with contemporary interiors, extensive onsite amenities, and visionary architecture form the foundation for this high-end, condominium-hotel ski resort.”
Skye Niseko comprises two interlocking, L-shaped volumes connected underground in order to frame natural views in all living rooms and bedrooms. Visitors arrive through a lobby clad with raw split-cut stone reminiscent of a slab of mountain. The rough materiality will contrast a dark metal finish, while a textured slate floor serves as a key focal point alongside bamboo wood surfaces, and vertical ceiling beams. A communal sky valet, exclusive to residents, is illuminated by a sculptural chandelier also inspired by the mountains. Home to Hokkaido’s first float tank, the onsite spa is wrapped in tatami mat-inspired materials across all private treatment rooms.
While Wilson Associates oversaw the design of the property’s five penthouses, Australian design practice Pike Withers led the design of the 100 onsite residences. Each penthouse is outfitted with fully equipped kitchens and heated outdoor balconies appointed with lounge seating, open fireplaces, and exterior onsens. Each minimalist-inspired suite has a monochromatic palette and employs hand-tufted, dark gray rugs underfoot to complement the property’s clean lines.
