The renowned Baur au Lac hotel in Zurich has just completed a renovation of its lobby lounge.
Since the Baur au Lac opened in 1844, Le Hall—as it is known—has been the meeting place of the hotel. The renovation has transformed the lounge back to its original light-filled guise, a restoration spearheaded by architect and designer Pierre-Yves Rochon. Rochon was also responsible for the recent reimagining of Baur au Lac’s Pavillon restaurant and the interiors of the hotel’s meeting rooms.
After meticulous research into the architectural history of the building, Pierre-Yves Rochon, collaborating with interior designer Frédéric d’Haufayt created an entirely new design concept that blended the hotel’s past, present, and future.
Le Hall effortlessly combines classical touches—wooden paneling, mirrors, and natural stone walls—with contrasting modern elements, such as the new polished mahogany and black granite bar. In addition to the rebirth of the glass dome, Le Hall’s entire ceiling was raised and an Empire-period chandelier installed.
Furthering the transformation are porcelain Chinese table lamps, gilded Art Deco sconces and floor lamps, concealed spotlights, handmade wool and silk carpeting, elegant seating areas, historic paintings, and an Art Deco fireplace.
