HKS and ForrestPerkins have developed a design that honors Texas roots for the newly opened JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa. Inspired by its location at the base of the Texas Hill Country and its sweeping views of a natural landscape (bordered by a bird sanctuary and edged by white limestone cliffs), the design scheme celebrates and reflects the rich cultural history and natural beauty of the area.
Native materials inform the property, built of Austin stone, and pecan, mesquite, and oak woods. The architecture is a mix of German and Spanish influences that define the region. The materials and building techniques reflect traditional European craftsmanship, while Spanish style is reflected in the large verandas, public areas, courtyards, and intimate gardens. The hotel’s spaces are at once grand and comfortable, accented by plaster, native woods, indigenous limestone, and hammered metals, along with a palette of warm earth tones and fabrics patterned after local wildflowers.
HKS and ForrestPerkins ensured that the luxury hotel afforded uninterrupted views of the surrounding terrain. Large floor-to-ceiling windows offer sweeping views from common areas and the hotel’s 1,002 guestrooms, and the spa and golf club are strategically placed for sightlines of rolling hills, craggy rocks, and lush trees.
