Hong-Kong based design firm AB Concept has unveiled its work on the interiors of W Retreat and Spa Bali – Seminyak, slated to open December 15. “With the W Retreat & Spa Bali we are pushing boundaries for hotel design, creating a distinctly unique look unlike anything else on the island,” says AB Concept founder and director Ed Ng. “Through our design, we want to woo the trendsetters who vacation along the Seminyak strip.”
In collaborating with the innovative design-led hotel brand, the firm has crafted a radically new Balinese narrative for W Retreat & Spa Bali, combining a festive color palette with distinctive architectural shapes, along with a very relaxed attitude to the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. Guests traveling through the resort’s different zones meet a series of energetic shades, from the deep pinks and purples of the lobby and living room to the aquatic greens of guestrooms, all inspired by the hues of Bali’s sunsets and seascapes.
The scheme pulls in the coastal landscape at every opportunity, beginning at reception, where the sea breeze whips past monsoon screens and whistles through a feature wall of hand-blown glass jars, each with a piece of capiz shell inside. Lounge chairs and daybeds foster a relaxed vibe in the open-sided Living Room space, home to a backlit lobby bar. Swaths of sheer linen complement furniture and lampshades woven from synthetic rattan to resemble pagoda roofs. Meanwhile, VIPs will be able to recline in privacy in the giant daybeds tucked into the W’s signature “Secret Space.”
Accommodations consist of 79 one-, two-, and three-bedroom villas. Design details include open skylights above baths and tubs in private inner courtyards. In the three-bedroom villas, glass doors in the living room concertina allow instant access to the private poolside and open-air barbecue facilities. Accessed across a small private pond and through the sliding door of a sleek circular vestibule, the Wow and Extreme Wow suites feature playful, organic, custom-built furniture.
