Nearly 100 artists have been commissioned by the Ace Hotel London Shoreditch to paint the hotel’s guestrooms and public spaces.

All pieces are unframed and are instead pasted, collaged, hung, or painted directly onto the walls. The project was inspired by the wheatpaste street art that adorns the streets of Shoreditch.

Graphic designer Jonathan Barnbrook- who previously collaborated with Adbusters and British artist Damien Hirst on work for David Bowie-created a poetic rewriting in one guestroom of the names that the Ace Hotel had when it was the original Shoreditch Empire Music Hall. The typography recalls London theatre posters and neoclassical Victorian printed books such as Owen Jones’ The Grammar of Ornament.
In other rooms, Justine Ashbee created woven artwork with geometric patterns inspired by the motifs of woven craftwork; collage artist Ben Reyer’s theme draws from visual illusions; while photographer Richard Evans’ addition plays on the idea of a country view among a cityscape.
