Architect and designer Thierry Despont is overseeing the transformation of a Stanford White-designed 1905 building in Manhattan’s theater district into the Chatwal New York. The hotel—which housed the Lambs Club, America’s first professional theater club—will showcase the iconic glamour and style of 1930s Gotham. Despont’s interiors are inspired by Malletier (travel trunk makers) of the period, complemented by angular nickel trim accenting glimmering jewel-toned glass.
The Chatwal’s 88 guestrooms and suites will receive equally romantic treatment, with suede-covered walls, leather-wrapped double closets, and private terraces in some rooms. The hotel commissioned Shifman Mattress to craft handmade beds, which will be covered in Frette linens. Guests can slip into Kashwére custom robes after spending time in the rain drop shower or Jacuzzi in the opulent bathrooms, defined by marble floors, mirrored walls, and an integrated mirror TV.
Chef Geoffrey Zakarian will lead the hotel’s 90-seat restaurant, offering diners an updated take on the classic bar and grill with an inviting, club-like ambiance.
The Chatwal Hotel New York is the vision of entrepreneur Sant Chatwal, chairman and CEO of Hampshire Hotels & Resorts. The spring 2010 opening of the Chatwal New York also marks the launch of Sant Chatwal’s new luxury hotel brand, the Chatwal, with plans in the works for additional luxury properties outside London and in India.
