Day two of the 2014 HD Expo was as packed as the first. Here are some of the highlights:
Radical Innovation in Hospitality Awards
An esteemed industry jury panel interviewed the finalists for the HD/John Hardy Group 8th Annual Radical Innovation in Hospitality Awards at HD Expo yesterday and the audience voted on the winner from two finalists who had been selected from a group of nearly 100 entrants. The winning project is Green Air Hotel, a concept presented by Lip Chiong of Studio Twist, China, who will receive $10,000 in seed money for the project.
The runner up, Hotel 2020, a concept by Natasha Bajc of Code Design Studio
Concept, is awarded $5,000, and the audience also heard a presentation from the student winner, Sky Lofts on the Boardwalk, a concept by Evelyn Choy and Evelyn Hartojo of the University of Melbourne.
This year’s jury panel members were Wing Chao, founding principal, Wing T. Chao Architect; John Hardy, CEO, John Hardy Group; Claude Amar, managing director, John Hardy Group and The Square Group; Michael Medzigian, chairman and managing partner, Watermark Capital Partners; Jena Thornton, managing director, Eagle Rock Ventures; Simon Turner, president, global development, Starwood Hotels & Resorts; and James Woods, president and COO, The Bowls.
18th Annual IIDA/HD Product Design Competition
IIDA also announced the winners of the 18th Annual IIDA/HD Product Design Competition. Awards in 19 categories were presented, in addition to the Eric Engstrom Best of Competition Award, which was awarded to Architectural Systems for its Cast Stone Dimensional Panels.
“The intent of IIDA/HD Product Design Competition is to ensure the highest standards of innovation, utility and aesthetic development in the products found here at the HD Expo each year,” says IIDA executive vice president and CEO Cheryl S. Durst. “This year’s winning products showcase a vitality and dynamism that brilliantly elevates the specialty field of hospitality design as well as the profession.”

The designers serving as the judging panel for this year’s competition were Scott Hierlinger, design director, Nelson; Rick Marencic, principal, Daroff Design; Patricia Rotondo, design principal, Chipman Design Architecture; and Annhy Shim, senior design manager, THE RELATED GROUP.
HD Expo Conference Sessions
Day two of the 2014 HD Expo also featured a full lineup of innovative and informational conference sessions, including Story and Spectacle: The LAB at Rockwell Group; Stay Awhile: The New Face of Hotel Dining; Wellness Reinvented: A Look at IHG’s EVEN Brand; and Adapting a Legacy: Waldorf Astoria and St. Regis. Discussions continued at HD magazine’s Social Hub in booth #1955, where attendees sat in on several NEWH Green Voice Sessions as well as HD Conversations with the Owner
