The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) has introduced the BIID Professional Pathway. For the first time, the new qualification will provide a national, professional standard for interior designers.
Designed for a candidate currently working in the industry, the pathway comprises five modules design process; communication and presentation; construction; materials, manufacture, and sustainability; professional practice and final project. This allows the use of everyday knowledge and skills to evidence professional competence.
With a national benchmark, design practice employers can track the progress of their employees. Taking part in the BIID Professional Pathway consolidates and validates the skills of self-taught designers and offers a clear distinction between professionals and hobbyists. It also bridges the gap for interior designers between education and achieving full professional standing. Candidates will be able to certify their professional competence and demonstrate that they have met national standards.
“The BIID Professional Pathway underpins the institute’s role as the professional body designated to provide standards, training and support to interior designers,” says Sue Timney, president of the BIID. “It is the cornerstone of our drive towards inspiring great talent and design excellence. Upon completion of the BIID Professional Pathway, a candidate will be eligible for full BIID membership, and will be recognized by the public and the interior design industry as a registered, practicing professional.”
