Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants has completed a multi-million dollar renovation and redesign of Donovan House, a Kimpton Hotel. The renovation of the downtown Washington, DC property encompasses all 193 guestrooms and suites, elevators, and hallway corridors and features a more cosmopolitan look.
Boston-based firm CBT reinvented Donovan House’s modern design to better accommodate business travelers. A primary focus of the renovation was the addition of a desk in every guestroom. Donovan House’s new standard five-foot dark oak finished desks feature built-in, flip-up outlets with standard power and USB sockets and gray ergonomic chairs.
In addition to the new functional additions, Donovan House’s rooms also feature a new color palette of contemporary gray and deep purple with rust accents. Clean lines match the new iridescent iris faux leather wraparound headboards, sleek black and white side tables, and a custom rust-colored faux crocodile bench-a pattern that is echoed on the room’s gray carpet.

Canopy beds are swathed in Kimpton’s signature zebra print Frette sheets and topped with a decorative rust-colored throw pillow. Décor is minimalistic and includes a single circular black and white print of the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
The hotel’s Donovan suite also received a stylish update to include a new sectional sofa, patterned accent rug, and hardwood floors in the living room area. A contemporary molecular smoked-glass chandelier hangs above a long dark wood table that seats ten, and the walls feature a custom graphic patchwork black and white print of iconic Washington, DC monuments.
Several of the hotel’s signature design elements, originally conceived by Studio GAIA, remain, such as the cocoon spiral showers, futuristic club chairs, and floor-to-ceiling windows in most rooms.
