When developer Next Century Associates purchased the Century Plaza in Los Angeles, they announced plans to raze the hotel and build a new complex with residential, retail, and office components. A group of preservationists, along with City Council member Paul Koretz, fought the developer to keep the famed property—particularly once it was named to the National Trust as one of America’s 11 most endangered historic places.
Now, both factions have reached a deal to preserve Century Plaza. According to the L.A. Times, redevelopment plans call for the preservation 400 hotel rooms, with a conversion of top-floor accommodations into 45 condos. Meeting space will also be reduced. Next Century Associates also would like to construct low structures to house retail or dining.
