Bloomfield Hills, Michigan-based textile company Crypton Inc. has acquired NANO-TEX from private equity and venture capital investors.

As a textile technology company, NANO-TEX is known for its performance finishes for consumer brands such as Gap, Target, Maidenform, Bass Pro Shops, Nordstrom, Land’s End, and Fisher-Price. The company uses a proprietary nanotechnology approach to improve textiles at the molecular level-providing stain and water resistance, moisture wicking, odor control, static elimination, and wrinkle-free properties. Last year, NANO-TEX technologies were on $280 million in branded finished products at retail stores globally.
“We are extremely pleased by Crypton’s acquisition. This assures that NANO-TEX will continue on a strong growth trajectory,” says Wilbur Ross, Jr., chairman of WL Ross and Co. LLC, a major stockholder in the acquisition. “Its expanding market reach and prominence will further enhance the competitiveness of WL Ross’ companies in the consumer and industrial fabrics industries too, the goal that sparked our initial investment interest in NANO-TEX eight years ago.”
Upon entering the contract market in 1993, Crypton provided an alternative to vinyl, which had been a standard at the time for heavily used upholstered furniture. Today, more than 100 million yards of Crypton fabrics are installed in commercial and residential applications worldwide.

”The pairing of two great performance textile brain trusts will only be enhanced by the shared technology of the two companies,” says Randy Rubin, chairman of the Crypton Company. “We will each bring new resources to this union, which will only strengthen us both in the retail and contract marketplace.”
NANO-TEX’s headquarters will now be at the Crypton Company’s in Bloomfield Hills, though the company will maintain sales operations in the US, Asia, India, and Europe. In addition, NANO-TEX will keep distribution centers in Hong Kong, Belgium, Mainland China, and the US.
“Twenty years ago, when we developed Crypton, it started a performance textile revolution. Healthcare, hospitality, and contract has been big users of performance textiles ever since,” adds Rubin. “We firmly believe that the sum of our parts, Crypton and Nano-Tex, will be the ultimate brain trust for performance textiles moving forward.”
