Kimpton’s Sir Francis Drake has unveiled its $10 million renovation in time for its 85th anniversary. Originally built in 1928, the boutique hotel now features a modern design complementing the original Gothic Revival and Regency architecture of the hotel.
Seattle-based Dawson Design Associates led renovations of the public spaces⎯⎯including the Starlight Room⎯⎯416 guestrooms, and 18,000 square feet of meeting and event space. The firm was commissioned to give Sir Francis Drake an upgrade, recapturing the drama and romance of the guestrooms and refreshing the public spaces in a playful manner.
The redesign references both its 1920s roots and the needs of its contemporary guests. Dawson Design started by expanding the grand hotel bar with elaborate European finishes.
The guestrooms and suites were upgraded to include red-lacquer Chinese trunks, contemporary steel and glass desks, horse-head lamps, chairs monogrammed with the hotel crest, and luxurious wall accents, carpets, and furnishings. Sir Francis Drake’s Starlight Room offers 360-degree views of the city and now boasts decadent classical lines of Venetian architecture.
