Cherem Serrano Arquitectos has transformed a 17th-century palace in Mexico City into a boutique hotel called DOWNTOWN Mexico, a member of Design Hotels. The firm preserved original components such as the stone-forge staircase with intricate handrails, handmade cement tiles, and columned arches while creating bohemian-chic interiors complemented by furnishings by Paul Roco.

Gray volcanic rock and exposed concrete walls define public spaces, while the 17 suites boast a variety of elements such as original floor tiles, light timber detailing, and vaulted brick ceilings. The unique design continues on the hotel’s rooftop terrace, constructed entirely from cement tiles and concrete. The industrial-inspired space is home to a bar and swimming pool.
