EDITION, Marriott’s collaboration with hospitality legend Ian Schrager, is moving from concept to development with its first hotel in Waikiki Beach in October, followed by a property in Istanbul. Functioning as a “home away from home” that responds to emerging cultural and social imperatives, each hotel will feature individualized design with custom furnishings and accessories throughout. “People do not want something derivative,” says Schrager, who is acting as a creative consultant and lending his vision for concept, design, and marketing. “They want the real thing and this is the whole idea behind EDITION.”
Yabu Pushelberg has been tasked with designing the brand’s first outpost in Waikiki Beach, whose amenities include a restaurant by chef Morimoto, Crazybox nightclub, sunrise pool with landscaped gardens by Deborah Nevins, private sunset beach with its own lagoon, a lobby bar hidden behind a secret passage, several bars, weight-loss boot camps, a full-service spa, an expansive ballroom, retail, and an outdoor movie theater.
Meanwhile, the Istanbul location will feature the design of Gabellini Sheppard Associates. The 77 spacious guestrooms will implement rosewood or soaped oak walls, ceilings, and floors; silk area rugs; and marble bathrooms with floor-to-ceiling glass-enclosed rain showers. Other elements encompass a double-height ceiling lobby with gold and silver leaf detailing, along with travertine floors and walls; a lobby bar with private garden terrace; a penthouse floor ballroom; private rooftop club; facilities by ESPA; and a private drawing room.
