Local firm Floss Barber, Inc. has designed Philadelphia’s first casino, SugarHouse Casino. The design plan pays homage to the city’s tradition of neighborhoods via a warm, modern, and inviting aesthetic. “Our goal for this project was to break the mold of formulaic casino design,” says CEO Floss Barber. “With the urban setting of SugarHouse Casino, it was important to design the interior to match its surroundings, and at the same time update casino design for a new generation.”
As such, the firm took advantage of the casino’s location on the Delaware River and also on the former site of the Jack Frost Sugar Refinery through metallic walls inspired by the color of money and “sugar stick” art features. Vivid red, turquoise, and gold highlight the facility, with lights focusing on different areas to serve as meeting points. A multi-dimensional, origami-like ceiling with twinkling “starlights,” as well as angled walls and multi-colored carpet with a winding red path, defines the gaming floor. Color-changing light fixtures above the table games add yet another dimension. Dining options, meanwhile, are designed with vintage images of the old refinery, plentiful natural light, graphic lettering on the walls, and a trellis-like ceiling.
