Four Seasons Hotel Buenos Aires has revealed the results of the first phase of its $40 million makeover. The design team-WA International on the lobby and guestrooms, EDG on the F&B venues, and 40NORTH on landscaping and garden design-has taken their cues from the city’s cosmopolitan vibe and Argentine traditions. A group of five sculptural cantering horses by local artist Vivienne Duchini welcomes guests outside the hotel. Formal topiary speaks to the city’s European sophistication, while jasmine vines on the building’s façade soften the look.
In the refreshed lobby, vertical design elements extend from the main entrance area up past the balcony level, giving the impression of a soaring space. Exotic polished macassar ebony reflects Buenos Aires’ sophistication, and patterns on large silver screens are inspired by the movements of the Argentine tango. South American semi-precious stones in shades of vivid blue adorn new reception desks. Caballos Libres, or “free horses,” a painting by renowned Argentine artist Alejandro Moy, portrays horses in full gallop, a reference to the country’s favorite sport of polo. Hand-tufted custom carpet and sculptural lighting fixtures made of blown glass complete the look.
Modeled as a courtyard, new restaurant Elena is rooted in the traditions of the Argentine family kitchen. The double-height space showcases a dramatic spiral staircase to the balcony level, where private dining areas await. Rich interior furnishings such as a glass-doored dry aging case, marble butcher’s table, and locally sourced antiques blend South American and European cultures, with hand-crafted finishes by local artisans adding a unique character. Meanwhile, the new Pony Line bar draws inspiration from the polo lifestyle, with elements such as leathers, riding motifs, art by Alejandro Moy, and pergamino-clad trunks that act as cocktail tables.
Locally inspired motifs and materials continue in the renovated guestrooms. Leather-wrapped drawer handles, nail head-studded trims, and carved horse lamps evoke the hotel’s polo theme, while an impressive alpaca-embossed headboard made by local artisans graces the bed. New leather-clad sliding doors open the space between bed and bath. In the bath area, finishes include polished walnut, Italian crema marfil marble, and blue and turquoise glass mosaics, plus technological upgrades including an LCD television built into the mirror.
