Following its August opening, Tokyo’s Gate Hotel Kaminarimon has joined the Design Hotels collection. Japanese architect Shigeru Uchida has transformed the former office building into contemporary urban sanctuary. “I’m interested in something beyond the visible or touchable, that is, the existence within the invisible,” he says.

In the 13th-floor lobby, modern furnishings and a large marble reception desk serve as a backdrop to panoramic views of the city. Meanwhile, the 137 guestrooms showcase floor-to-ceiling windows, textiles by Marimekko designer Masaru Suzuki, and original artwork by the acclaimed Japanese artist Katsuhiko Hibino. Hibino created five abstract paintings influenced by the interplay between Uchida’s architectural design and the bustling neighborhood of Asakusa surrounding the hotel.
