Chicago-based Goettsch Partners (GP) has been hired by developer China Resources Land Limited (CR Land) to design a project in Neighborhood 2 of Shenzhen, China’s Qianhai district.

The project will include three office towers, a 5-Star hotel tower, an apartment tower, shopping mall, and retail stores totaling 5,414,250 square feet-the firm’s largest project to date in China. GP is designing all of the towers, as well as the hotel and apartment podiums and their affiliated program spaces. It will collaborate with UK-based design firm Benoy, who developed the master plan and is designing the shopping mall and retail areas.
The overall concept will feature a unified complex made up of buildings designed with a textured elegance that differentiates them from the surrounding blue-glass buildings of Shenzhen. A metallic-painted aluminum frame has consistent spacing between verticals to prioritize internal planning flexibility in the office towers. The spacing between the horizontal frame elements varies in order to respond to each office building’s height and proportions. Double fins accentuate the frame’s vertical component, and double horizontal fins on the hotel and apartment towers counter this character.

The commission marks GP’s latest project for CR Land. Other assignments have included the Grand Hyatt Dalian, a mixed-use tower in Nanning, the Hotel Kapok Shenzhen Bay, and two additional towers at Shenzhen Bay.
