The Hyatt Regency Atlanta has been dedicated to John Portman of John Portman and Associates, honoring his contribution to the brand and the hospitality industry. Known for his atrium design, Portman was honored with a dedication ceremony and a plaque inscription in the hotel lobby.
As Portman’s original atrium hotel, the Hyatt Regency Atlanta’s opening in 1967 launched Hyatt Hotels as a major hospitality brand. During the dedication ceremony, speakers recalled the reaction inspired in 1967, where people circled the block to see the innovative architecture.
Portman’s accomplishments were celebrated and acknowledged in a ceremony attended by his family, current and past employees, members of the press, representatives of Hyatt, and dignitaries such as Ambassador Andrew Young.
Featured on the lobby wall facing the Peachtree Street entrance, the plaque inscription reads: “This building is dedicated to John C. Portman, Jr. in recognition of the landmark architecture that changed the course of the lodging industry and the history of Hyatt.” The plaque also recognizes John Portman as both the developer and architect for the project.
