Design inspiration can come from anywhere-even zoology. When it came time to renovate the Los Angeles Ballroom at Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, the team charged with the task didn’t look to famous architects or artists. Santa Monica-based Design 360 Unlimited found its muse in the works of Ernst Haeckle, a 19th-century zoology professor who created detailed illustrations of organic forms. Design 360 combined orange and mango hues and blue, gray, and white accents with structures that reflected the floral and coral shapes of Haeckle’s drawings. To keep a contemporary feel, the team incorporated more modern shapes as well.
The 25,000 square-foot ballroom is just one piece of the $1.3 million in renovations to the property’s California Level, which also includes the California Lounge, the California Showroom exhibition space, and a series of breakout rooms. The entire California Level will get new paint, carpet, and wallcoverings. The hotel also plans to overhaul its original 1966 chandeliers to cast a brighter light on the newly decorated spaces.
