Ian Schrager’s much-discussed Public Hotel in Chicago has opened its doors. “The idea is to have a less expensive hotel where you still have great service, great design, and an exciting food and beverage concept,” Schrager told the New York Times in September. “Because I think the country’s more complicated now. It’s not going to be so much about upward mobility in the future.”

The legendary hotelier also has purchased a site in New York for his new brand; Bloomberg reports that a second Manhattan deal is likely in the works. Earlier this month, Schrager acquired a Crowne Plaza hotel in London.
