Commune Hotel & Resorts plans to introduce Thompson Hotels to Playa del Carmen, Mexico, as part of a transformative, mixed-use project from Mexico-based real estate development firm, Thor Urbana. New Yorkâ€â€œbased ICRAVE will complete the design of the rooms, F&B outlets, and pool.

“This project is a powerful combination of luxury hotel, sophisticated nightlife, and well-curated retail and dining in downtown Playa del Carmen,” says Niki Leondakis, CEO of Commune Hotels & Resorts. “This deal marks our ongoing expansion into resort areas and the growing presence of Thompsonâ€â€œbranded lifestyle hotels in Mexico and throughout Latin America.”

Slated to open in 2015, the Thompson Playa del Carmen will feature 125 rooms, including 90 suites, as well as a rooftop pool and spa. It will be the only hotel to have both a central 5th Avenue and beachfront location. The hotel’s 30,000-square-foot rooftop will also host a culinary concept that overlooks the town and Caribbean Sea. The property is Commune’s second in Mexico following its Thompson Cabo San Lucas project, currently under development.

The overall development-which will total more than 300,000 square feet and include international retail, cafés, and restaurants in addition to the Thompson Hotel-will be located in the heart of the town’s famed 5th Avenue. This two-mileâ€â€œlong shopping, entertainment, and nightlife thoroughfare is Mexico’s second most-trafficked pedestrian street.

“We’re excited to bring to life the newest outpost for Thompson Hotels,” says Siobhan Barry, partner and project designer at ICRAVE. “Our design intention is to create a destination hotel that combines the vibrant and bohemian spirit of Playa del Carmen with the energy and edginess of the Thompson brand.”
