InterContinental Singapore has unveiled its 65 revamped shophouse guestrooms and suites, designed to reflect the Peranakan heritage that dates back to the 17th century when seafarers from China married indigenous Malays. The accommodations feature dark teak flooring, intricate carvings, artifacts, and window shutters overlooking the narrow street below.
“The shophouse rooms provide an opportunity for visitors to Singapore to really experience the heritage, get a feel for the traditional culture and lifestyle of the people who actually lived in this area,” says Tash Tobias, the hotel’s general manager.
