Hamburg, Germanyâ€â€œbased JOI-Design has recently renovated the public areas of the Steigenberger Grandhotel Belvédère in Davos, Switzerland.

Originally built in 1875 in a Belle Époque style, the Steigenberger Grandhotel Belvédère is set in the Swiss Alps. These mountainous surroundings, as well as the nostalgic notions of Switzerland’s grand hotels, were a major influence upon JOI-Design’s concept. Fine details such as the dark, fishbone-patterned veneer on the front desk, suggest the craftsmanship of past eras.
The redesigned spaces blend traditional charm with the amenities of a modern building. Taking cues from the mountain’s earth tones, the lounge, café, and bar have a subtle palette and intimate nooks. Bespoke carpeting designed with large scrolled motifs recalls Alpine soil, while a lighter-toned ellipse draws attention to the center piano. Above the piano, a moss-green chandelier made from Murano glass accents the otherwise muted palette.

Newspapers hung on pegs recall traditional Viennese coffee houses and create the impression of a library. As for furnishings, chocolate-velvet chesterfield sofas and cocooning wingback armchairs complement occasional tables, which are fashioned from burnished metal tops and tinted glass bases.
The café, with its tailored herringbone and leather upholstery, has a modern twist with glass screens digitally imprinted with a filigree pattern. More green chandeliers add an accent of color to the scene.
