Palacio del Inka, a Luxury Collection Hotel from Starwood, has reopened its doors in Cusco, Peru, following a $15 million renovation. The hotel-part of the Incan civilization in the early 15th century and later designed and inhabited by Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century-brims with culture and historic architecture.

Latin America architectural and interior design firm Caparra Entelman & Asociados oversaw the two-year rehabilitation in collaboration with local artisans, craftsmen, and the community. The hotel’s 203 guestrooms evoke Peru’s colonial past through custom-designed carved wooden doors, chests, and writing desks, as well as vintage paintings and mirrors. Meanwhile, the 17 Casa de los Cuatro Bustos suites boast 13-foot-tall ceilings and rich textiles.

The spa conveys a residential atmosphere. Common in Cusco homes, the spa furnishings are made of grained tornillo woods varnished in a dry dark green. Gold patina doors and the wallpaper’s gilded tones complement the local travertine Angelica marble in the spa suites.

Reception area
For Inti Raymi restaurant, local artisans restored arches that connect the space to the courtyard patio. At Rumi Bar, an original Incan wall sits in the center of the room, draped with silk and velvet curtains and accented by iron chandeliers. Local artisans also recrafted the original ceilings in the hotel’s five sun-drenched event spaces while recreating a Damascus-like design aesthetic with hues of sand and silver.
